Most passion fruit cultivars grown under subtropical climates bear fruit twice a year, in the summer and the winter. Fruits abscise after ripening. Peel color is either purple or yellow with yellow fruit being larger and very sour.
We developed an exotic flavored passionfruit cultivar, having a bright purple colored peel with beautiful dark purple spots, which is 1.5-2x larger than the leading Israeli commercial varieties. The passion fruit cultivar is named ‘ORIS’ (line ‘280-4’), and has a very juicy and aromatic sweet-sour taste. It is also able to flower and set fruit during the warm summer, creating a bearing period which can begin in July and end in April – a total of 9 months! After ripening, many of the fruit remain on the vine, due to reduced abscission. This allows farmers to control harvest time.
Oris is relatively round and its appearance is appealing to the eye.
Oris has a much longer season than the leading commercial varieties.
Oris has very vigorous growth.
Physical Attributes of the Fruit:
Oris has a light purple peel color with dark purple spots that is very attractive to consumers. Oris’ fruits are 1.5-2x larger than Passion Dream, the leading Israeli commercial variety.
Oris’ taste, size, appearance and potential yield has attracted much attention from expert growers. Oris is intended to be sold as fresh fruit but can also be used in the production of juices. Oris is protected by PBR (Plant Breeders Rights) in Israel.
We are looking for growers and distributors in Israel as well as partners abroad for growing, marketing and selling Oris.
