What is the Color of a Superpixel?
This technology suggests using a 3D Gaussian in RGB space as an effective model for representing a superpixel’s color. The results show that this model, despite its simplicity, represents the superpixel’s colors and variations well, leading to better segmentation. Further, the model provides additional information about physical properties of the scene, that can not be obtained by merely using average RGB values - a distinct advantage for applications such as color constancy (finding the illumination color), dehazing, and noise reduction.
Summary
We presented a computationally efficient model for describing the color of a superpixel. We demonstrated how applications such as color constancy, dehazing and denoising may benefit from this model. It should be emphasized that the actual algorithms we suggested are trivial and were only described to show the strength of our model, which is the core of this paper. Future work will concentrate on actual use of the model with state of the art algorithms. We believe that this simple model may contribute to other applications beside those suggested in the paper, such as segmentation and 3D reconstruction (shape from shading) to name a few but feel the actual implementation is beyond the scope of this technology.
